CLEVELAND, Ohio — The state of Ohio on Thursday reported 16,159 new cases of COVID-19 in its weekly dashboard update, almost identical to last week’s new case number.

This week’s case total averages to about 2,308 new cases per day over seven days. Cases remain well short of the totals in January, when they hit nearly 200,000 a week.

Total reported COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic were 38,778. However, weekly death trends will not be reported for the next few weeks, because the National Center for Health Statistics recently implemented a new coding system and is currently reprocessing all 2022 deaths files, the state said in a notice on its COVID-19 dashboard.

The Ohio Department of Health will continue to update the total reported COVID-19 deaths but will not resume reporting weekly trends until the reprocessing is caught up, the agency said.

COVID-19 death totals also were not reported on June 9 and 16, due to a two-week pause in the assignment of causes of death because the National Center for Health Statistics is implementing a new coding system, the state said.

The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 has now reached 2,831,228.

A total of 7,353,149 Ohioans have received at least one vaccination, representing about 66.8% of Ohioans age 5 and up.

Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 23,875 deaths among people reported as unvaccinated, and 1,282 among people reported to be fully vaccinated. Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 69,874 hospitalized Ohioans who were not fully vaccinated, and 4,886 fully vaccinated people hospitalized.

The state does not report for COVID-19 cases whether people were vaccinated.

The total cases being reported recently likely are understated, as some people do not report at-home tests and others may not be testing at all.

Today’s recap

* Total reported cases: 2,831,228, up 16,159.

* Total reported hospitalizations: 118,756, up 467.

* Total reported ICU admissions: 13,722, up 26.

June 16 recap

* Total reported cases: 2,815,069, up 16,169.

* Total reported hospitalizations: 118,289, up 445.

* Total reported ICU admissions: 13,696, up 31.
