Last week, the state reported seven K-12 school outbreaks affecting 26 students and staff. Michigan will now pause on such reporting for the summer.Jacob Hamilton | The Ann Arbor News

Michigan identified seven new COVID-19 outbreaks and clusters involving 26 students and staff last week at K-12 schools. In the largest, there were six infected students at Elmwood Elementary School in Lansing in Eaton County.

The information was updated on Tuesday, June 21, but the reporting will now pause for the summer, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported.

In total, the state reported 36 new outbreaks, down from 62 last week. Most of these, 22, were at long-term care facilities.

As of June 13, there were 23 outbreaks or clusters in schools or childcare programs. Some schools released students for the summer in early June and COVID-19 numbers across the state, especially in southeast Michigan, have been on a decline.

The prior week, there were 37 outbreaks in long-term care facilities, where vulnerable people live and the coronavirus is closely monitored.

The state health department also is tracking 382 ongoing outbreaks. This is down from 425 on June 13. In schools, there are 95 ongoing outbreaks and 1,412 cases among students and staff.

The latest school outbreaks or clusters were in Clinton, Eaton and Washtenaw counties and Detroit.

There were five cases at Harvest Elementary School in Saline and three cases each at University Of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy in Detroit and Perry Early Learning Center in Ypsilanti.

Below is an online database that allows readers to search outbreak data by school name or by city or county. The number of those infected is a cumulative total since the original outbreak. (Note: Washtenaw County only reports cumulative totals for the past 28 days.)

A K-12 school-associated outbreak is defined as multiple cases comprising at least 10% of students or staff, or at least three probable or confirmed cases, within a specified core group at an educational institution and epidemiologically linked in a school setting. A cluster is the same but accounts for cases where a definitive linkage has not been established.

Outbreak data for K-12 schools includes only cases of people or staff members infected at school or at school-related functions. Those who caught the virus outside of school are not included.

The state’s weekly outbreak reports no longer include data for manufacturing and construction sites, retail, bars and restaurants, universities and colleges, social gatherings, office settings, migrant camps, indoor and outdoor community events, personal services and religious services.
