Following summer COVID-19 surge, Sacramento-area families prepare to go back to school
Students are getting ready to return to school following Sacramento County’s summer surge of COVID-19 cases.”I’m familiar with the spike that’s been going on, but as long as protocols are in place to keep them safe and people are staying home when they’re sick, it can be safe to return back to normalcy,” parent Lindsay Klemin said.She has a 6-year-old son, who is about to start first grade, and a 2-year-old daughter, who will be going to preschool. Klemin said her son is vaccinated, and she plans to do the same with her daughter.In Sacramento County, more than half of those ages 12-19 are at least partially vaccinated. In the 5-11 age group, it is nearly 40%. It is just under 5% in the 0-4 age group.Last school year, the Sacramento City Unified School District announced it would require older students to be vaccinated, even setting a deadline. However, it did not end up enforcing the mandate.The most recent data from the district online is from June, showing nearly 61% of students have gotten at least one shot.When it comes to masks, a district spokesperson told KCRA 3 that its mask policy from last year has continued through the summer, mandating masks indoors as the county sees a high level of spread by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards.However, the SCUSD Board of Education will meet on Thursday, August 11, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., and will review its COVID-19 mitigation measures for the fall, according to SCUSD Communications Manager Al Goldberg.Sacramento City Teachers Association President David Fisher said the union is in favor of starting the school year off with a requirement to wear masks indoors.”Yes, it isn’t without controversy but our position is it’s better to prioritize the safety, and science shows that masks are still an effective way to mitigate the spread of COVID,” Fisher said.
