Baxter Regional COVID-19 update

As of Wednesday, there are 552 active COVID-19 cases in Baxter County, which is what is hoped to be the beginning of a downward trend. There are 32 COVID-19 patients admitted at Baxter Regional, with seven in ICU and five on ventilators. There are 27 Baxter Regional employees with active COVID-19 at home in isolation.

Additional statistics from Baxter Regional:

•    75% of 32 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized are not fully vaccinated.

•    84.8% of 726 COVID-19 patients hospitalized since March 1, 2021, were not fully vaccinated.

•    81.6% of 163 COVID-19 deaths since March 1, 2021, were not fully vaccinated.

On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, a shot that’s already been given to millions of Americans since its emergency use authorization (EUA) over a year ago. This action by the FDA means the agency has completed the same rigorous, time-consuming review of the Moderna shot as dozens of other established vaccines. The decision was bolstered by real world evidence from more than 200 million doses administered in the U.S. since the FDA cleared the shot in December 2020. The approved vaccine will be marketed as Spikevax for the prevention of COVID-19 in individuals 18 years of age and older, joining Comirnaty/PfizerBioNTech as the two FDA approved COVID-19 vaccines. For a list of local sites administering either FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine, visit www.baxterregional.org/vaccine.

The Baxter Regional COVID-19 Resource Line continues to be available at (870) 508-7001 as an easy way to access all COVID-19 services using just one phone number. Anyone in the community may call to schedule an appointment for a COVID-19 test, vaccine, donate items for the medical center staff, make a monetary donation to Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation, or reach the COVID-19 Hotline.

Remember the very best way to continue this downward trend is to get a COVID-19 vaccine, if you are eligible and continue using precautions, remembering the basic 3 Ws: wash your hands, watch your distance and wear your mask.
