New Delhi, December 03: A new variant of the corona virus (Covid-19), Omicron Variant, has raised concerns around the world. The discovery of this variant in South Africa caused a stir around the world. In such a situation, the question arises as to whether the vaccine currently being used on Corona Virus is also resistant to Omicron. In addition, Bharat Biotech’s Covid vaccine could be more effective against the Covaxin omicron variant, said an Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) official. The Hindu Business Line said in a report without giving an anonymous official that Kovacin is likely to be more effective against Omicron than other available vaccines. Covacin, a virion-inactivated vaccine, covers the entire virus and may work against this highly mutated new variant, the official explained.

Another anonymous ICMR official said in the report that covacin was also found to be effective against other types such as alpha, beta, gamma and delta. So we can only hope that it will be effective against the new variants. Meanwhile, the officer has warned against complacency until more samples are received and tested. “We expect the vaccine to provide protection,” officials said. Once we receive the samples, we will test the effectiveness of this vaccine at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.

The vaccine has been developed against the original type found in Wuhan and has been shown to work against other variants. The company said in a statement that further research was underway, citing a source.

Omicron more dangerous

South African health officials say the Omicron is showing more mutations than its predecessor. Salim Abdul Karim, an epidemiologist in South Africa, told CBS News that the existing vaccines on the new variant were not working. Apart from this, it is also spreading rapidly. If this type spreads faster or faster than Delta, it will be very difficult to predict, Karim said.

This new variant of the Corona was earlier named as B.1.1.529, but now the WHO has stated that it will be known as Omicron. Also, it has been placed in the category of ‘Variant of Concern’. This means that concerns have been raised about this new variant of the corona virus and will be given special attention in the coming days. The WHO said in a statement that it was “concerned” that this variant of the Corona was also undergoing rapid mutations.
